Richmond coach Adem Yze spirited in his response when quizzed on the club's interest in Port Adelaide free agent Zak Butters following reports earlier in the week.

Butters is considering a switch to Victoria, with Western Bulldogs and Geelong also in the running, while the Power won't give up without a fight.

The Tigers have been storing away ample funds to attack the free agency and trade markets either this year or next, but as Yze said, when a player like Butters arises as a potential options, "it'd be crazy not to think about it".

"Our club is serious about getting better," Yze said.

"To bring in free agents and players, who are established players, or going to the draft again, with a strong draft hand, those decisions will be made later in the year.

"But to be in those discussions, obviously Blair needs to be thinking about those things, so when there's a player, as good as him, that there's a possibility that might become available, we've got to think about it.

"That's our job as a footy club to get better. We want to bounce back and get back to finals as quick as we can, and I've said this before, whether we start looking at those established players this year or next, that will start to link in with our planning.

"He's obviously a terrific player, so it'd be crazy not to think about it."

The Tigers are believed to be able to offer a figure of close to $2 million a season for eight years.

It comes as a direct result of the club's heavy draft focus and subsequent financial saving.

It's all part of Richmond's elaborate plan to win a premiership within five years.
