Carlton's relationship with GWS may be about to grow stronger following news reported on a potential trade between the two clubs on Channel Nine's Footy Classified on Sunday night.

Journalist Damian Barrett reported on Footy Classified the Blues could get as many as three players from the Giants this trade period, and possibly all in the same trade.

Out-of-favour Giants Devon Smith and Matt Kennedy could be on their way to Carlton, while Barrett suggested veteran midfielder Ryan Griffen - who joined GWS in the 2014 trade period - could be used as a sweetener in a big three-player move.

Despite the Giants' official word on Griffen suggesting he's not up for trade, Barrett believes that may not be entirely true, and he could be heading back to Victoria.

"The Giants are saying [he's unavailable], but he didn't play (on the weekend), and may well get tacked on to the back end of a potential deal involving Carlton again.

"Devon Smith, a play who's got the interest of probably four or five, or maybe six clubs, he and Matt Kennedy, and maybe Griffen could slot in on the end of a potential three-player movement to the one club.

"The Blues are clearly after an experienced midfielder, but if he appeals to them, we'll see."

The 31-year-old played just three matches for the Giants this season in his third year at the club, after a foot injury cut his season short in their round three match against North Melbourne.

Griffen has played just 39 games since making the switch from the Bulldogs to GWS, and has averaged 20.4 disposals and 3.6 clearances since the move.

Smith and Kennedy both look certain to depart GWS at season's end, with the pair playing 109 and 19 games for the Giants respectively.
