Re-drafting the top 10 picks of the 2014 AFL Draft

The 2014 draft class is beginning to enter its prime, but many of the stars out of this draft weren't even in the top 10 picks. It's a draft littered with misses and perhaps "what ifs", so we thought it was time to cast our eye over the 2014 national draft and select our top 10. How many top 10 picks will retain their spot? Original Top 10 10. Nakia Cockatoo 9. Darcy Moore 8. Peter Wright 7. Paul Ahern 6. Caleb Marchbank 5. Jordan De Goey 4. Jarrod Pickett 3. Angus Brayshaw 2. Christian Petracca Paddy McCartin Jake Lever (Geelong) Lever has made a name for himself as an excellent intercept marker in defence. He has a great football mind which allows him to get across and help teammates when isolated. He has great foot skills which is a plus for a defender of his size and was a key cog in the Crows' grand final appearance in 2017. (Photo by Daniel Pockett/AFL Media/Getty Images)[/caption] Angus Brayshaw (Collingwood) Only a short walk across the road here for Angus. Brayshaw, at his best, is an elite midfielder. A third-placed finish in the 2018 Brownlow Medal showed his true ability but consistency has been the real issue. A good ball user on both sides of the body and a very good decision-maker, Brayshaw has become a fixture of the Melbourne midfield. (Photo by Quinn Rooney/Getty Images)[/caption] Brayden Maynard (Gold Coast) Maynard had a breakout 2020 and looked a likely All-Australian selection but was snubbed for that honour. However, there was no taking away his standing as one of the game's best small defenders. He has a real grit and determination to beat his opponent, but he also has good foot skills and is able to hurt teams when going on the attack. (Photo by Paul Kane/Getty Images)[/caption] Jordan De Goey (GWS) De Goey is one of the league's most explosive players. He has the ability to turn a game on its head in the blink of an eye. He isn't as consistent as maybe Collingwood fans would like but his ability to score bulk goals quickly is almost invaluable. His best form is up there with the game's elite and he is a match-winner. (Photo by Ryan Pierse/Getty Images)[/caption] Caleb Daniel (GWS) Daniel is arguably the game's premier rebounding defender, his size hasn't stopped him at all. Daniel is key to the Bulldogs' launch off half-back and his foot skills are nothing short of top shelf. He has the ability to cut the opposition to ribbons with ball in hand. Can struggle if isolated in defence but is usually good enough to avoid those scenarios. (Photo by Paul Kane/Getty Images)[/caption] Jack Steele (Collingwood) Steele was another on this list who had a breakout 2020, he finished third in the Brownlow Medal and was key to St Kilda's return to finals football. Steele doesn't do one thing better than most but he does a bit of everything, it's what makes him so versatile and allows the Saints to deploy him as either a ball-winner or stopper. He could well be higher on this list in 12 months time. (Photo by Albert Perez/Getty Images)[/caption] Isaac Heeney (GWS) Heeney is one of the game's most unique talents, he has great skills, is an elite athlete and enjoys the physical side of the game. You can play him forward or midfield and he will almost certainly impact the game, and unlike many who play that role, he is able to do so consistently. As the Swans' list rebuilds Heeney will play a vital role in that build and he will only get better as he faces more responsibility. A genuine star. (Photo by Matt King/Getty Images)[/caption] Darcy Moore (Melbourne) Moore was a failed forward and went back in a bid to find some form, and boy did he. Moore has become one of the game's best defenders, he is as hard to beat one-on-one as anyone while being a great intercept marker. His speed is a great asset both on defence and offence while his elite foot skills add to his weaponry when rebounding from defence. (Photo by Quinn Rooney/Getty Images)[/caption] Christian Petracca (Melbourne) Arguably one of the game's best players now, Petracca had a boom 2020 and stamped himself not only on the Melbourne midfield but the league as a whole. Petracca dominated games in midfield and was able to hit the scoreboard regularly which made him arguably the game's most dangerous player in 2020. His size and speed from the contest makes him an incredibly hard matchup and his ability to find space in traffic separates him from the rest. (Photo by Graham Denholm/AFL Photos via Getty Images)[/caption] Harris Andrews (St Kilda) The game's best defender, Andrews was a walk-up All-Australian in 2019 and locked that spot away again in 2020 despite missing some time with an injury. Andrews is as good one-on-one as anyone in the game, he can mark as well as spoil and reads the game incredibly well. He makes good decisions within his capabilities with ball in hand and is very rarely beaten. He keeps opposition forwards at bay while being a key figure in launching attacks for Brisbane.
