Port Adelaide midfielder Ollie Wines has been removed from Sunday's contest against Sydney with a heart issue, and was replaced by Rory Atkins.

Power GM of Football Chris Davies provided an update at the three-quarter time break.

"Ollie had a bit of a heart flutter," Davies said.

"He's in the rooms now, feeling far better. It's something he's had to manage over time. He knows he has to take himself out of the game when these things happen.

"It's only concerning in the sense that we're worried about Ollie's health. But right now, he's back to normal in the rooms.

"I'm sure he'll go through whatever he needs to go through this week to be potentially available next week."

Coach Ken Hinkley also understood that panic when talking about someone's heart, but says Wines has a "good handle on it".

"Ollie had another one of his little episodes on his heart, which our doctors got well under control," Hinkley said post-match.

"He has had, in the past, a little procedure to look after that, obviously, it has come back a bit today.

"It sounds really bad when you talk about someone's heart, but the reality is he's got a good handle on it, our medical team have got an incredibly good handle on it, so we feel safe enough around what's going on.

"We'll protect Ollie, make sure we do all the tests again this week."

Wines revealed in June last year that he had been dealing with his heart condition for two years, when he experienced palpitations against Melbourne in 2022.

At the time, the Brownlow medallist was diagnosed with a heart irregularity, saying he felt dizzy and nauseous.

Last year, against Hawthorn in Round 10, Wines experienced a similar incident, and was subbed from the match.

He played the following week against North Melbourne.

Following his substitution from the Hawks clash, Wines opened up about his battles, saying to the club website it does "happen occasionally".

"The two times it has occurred has been in the middle of football games, where it's sort of a little bit hard to hide away from that," Wines said.

"So fortunately, for me, it's not life-threatening, it's just something that affects me playing at a 100 per cent (when it happens), which, obviously, it's going to affect me and my occupation at times.

"So we've got some contingency plans in place to get through to the end of the season, and there's some things we can do at the end of the season to fix it.

"There's procedures that I can have (to rectify it). Respectfully, I'm not going to go into the details of it. But there are procedures that can fix it, and there's very short recovery; they don't involve too much. So that's something that, once the end of the season comes, we'll do that."

In December last year, Wines underwent off-season surgery on his heart to address the irregularity that caused the palpitations.
