A "pissed off" Michael Voss has been left frustrated by his side's failure to execute against Sydney on Friday nigh as the Swans' two most damaging stars "got off the chain".

Carlton fell to Sydney by 16 points at the SCG, with the Blues on top of the game for large periods before the home side kicked six of the final eight goals.

The Blues lost the clearance battle 45-36, with the Swans winning both stoppage and centre clearances totals, while Carlton still managed to record more inside 50s.

"Stating the obvious isn't it, they finished off the game better than us," Voss said post-game.

"I think that's what makes you pretty pissed off to be honest. We had the game where we wanted it, and we couldn't finish off the game. So rather than being able to do that as consistently as we need to...

"The clearance game was pretty tough for us for most of the night. It didn't feel like we were losing too many metres on that, but that can bank up over time. We were pretty determined to do well at this venue.

"So to have the game largely going in our favour, there was some really good method in the way we played in the early parts of the game.

"But you've got to close the deal. We weren't good enough to close it."

Sydney star Isaac Heeney took out his third Goodes-O'Loughlin Medal with a dominant performance, recording 38 disposals, 18 contested possessions and nine clearances.

It could've been a bigger night for the midfield-forward ace, who managed just two goals from seven scoring shots. Teammate Chad Warner was almost as damaging, finding the ball 30 times for a return of two goals.

Voss said his side had plans to try and quell the Swans pair, expressing his frustration with the result the two guns had, leaving the Carlton coach to 'tip his hat'.

"Roles that we had, we strayed from," Voss said.

"Heeney and Warner, we put a heap of effort into our planning and we couldn't get it done in the second half. They got off the chain, the stats are there to tell the impact they had.

"[Heeney's] damage is done around midfield, but he also pushes forward. He had seven shots on goal, we were lucky he was inaccurate. He got lots of looks.

"We had a few little mechanics - without disclosing too much - to be able to make sure we manage that. But we just didn't manage it well enough between the two areas.

"They're the little things in our game that we've got to make sure we tidy up. They're good players. They're very good players. Whatever we did, we certainly couldn't stop them. Tip your hat to them, but I would've liked us to execute better than we did."

The loss has made Carlton susceptible to falling several spots on the ladder by the end of the round, with the Blues now having just four wins from their 10 matches.
