The best part about entering new footy season is that it's a fresh slate - every club starts from zero.

Optimism is high as fans relish in the prospect of their club making some form of improvement on last year, whether that's contending for a premiership, returning to September action, or seeing young players blossom into genuine superstars to push a rebuild forward.

Whether they've just won back-to-back premierships or are coming off a one-win campaign, each club has something to look forward to next year.

So, here's one thing your favourite club should be excited about entering the new year.

Wearing the famous number 4 guernsey comes with a lot of pressure but if any young Tiger looks poised to live up to it, it's Sam Lalor.

The midfield wrecking ball was an excitement machine before his debut year was cruelly ended by injury. Excluding his two matches against Essendon and Geelong, where Lalor exited the game early with injury, the 19-year-old averaged 14.4 disposals and 5.2 score involvements per game, similar to the levels of production seen by first-year stars Murphy Reid and Max Hall.

It highlights how damaging Lalor can be at full strength and suggests the infamous "sophomore slump" should be firmly out of the question for the young gun. His small sample size is certainly enough to get excited over for the Richmond faithful, and could see this rebuild rapidly progress for the yellow and black.
