The best part about entering new footy season is that it's a fresh slate - every club starts from zero.
Optimism is high as fans relish in the prospect of their club making some form of improvement on last year, whether that's contending for a premiership, returning to September action, or seeing young players blossom into genuine superstars to push a rebuild forward.
Whether they've just won back-to-back premierships or are coming off a one-win campaign, each club has something to look forward to next year.
So, here's one thing your favourite club should be excited about entering the new year.
North Melbourne
The return of the Shinboner Spirit

Many North Melbourne fans would agree that the Kangaroos have lacked a bit of edge in their last few seasons. While the talent on the list is building strongly with each passing year, the lack of fire and heart in their on-field performances has been evident, losing six games by 50-plus points in 2025; only three fewer than the one-win Eagles.
Perhaps this lack of fight has played a role in their inability to take the leap towards the top eight like most have been expecting.
However, their off-season has looked to address these issues. They drafted crafty small forward Lachy Dovaston, who's fiery attitude has been likened to known pest Nick Watson. Additionally, the acquisition of Charlie Spargo brings some extra grit as one of the league's better high-pressure forwards and the looming opportunity for Harry Sheezel to step up as captain in place of Jy Simpkin could bring about extra determination to his game.
The Roos have been often scrutinised for being unable to progress past "good losses" but with these changes to their line-up, maybe that will finally change in 2026.
