North Melbourne forward Nick Larkey is set to become the Kangaroos' captain for 2026 after being voted in by the club

Jy Simpkin was the captain for the Kangaroos in 2025 after co-captaining for two seasons before that. Simpkin explored a trade out of North Melbourne in the offseason, which resulted in him stepping aside as captain.

Larkey, who has been the Kangaroos' vice-captain for the past two seasons, has now been voted into the role as sole captain.

"Nick has emerged as a key leader and figurehead of this club in his 10 years here, and he should be proud that his peers have elected him to drive this team into its next phase," GM of Football Todd Viney said.

"We're extremely confident that Nick can help take this club forward, and he will be exceptionally well supported by Harry whose on and off-field leadership qualities continue to impress at such a young age.

"We're also excited to have Tristan, Luke, Charlie, and Cam step into this new leadership team, and we believe they're ready to set the standard for the entire squad as we target an improved campaign in 2026.

"We also thank Jy for his significant contribution and leadership over the past three seasons. He remains a highly valued and respected member of the playing group and will be an important pillar of support for our new leaders."

The 27-year-old has now played a total of 134 games for North Melbourne, becoming the Roos' best forward, leading their goalkicking for five straight years. His stellar play also saw him gain an All-Australian selection in 2023.

Harry Sheezel will return to the leadership group next year, while fresh faces Luke Davies-Uniacke, Tristan Xerri, Charlie Comben and Cameron Zurhaar are expected to be featured for the rest of the official leadership team for the Kangaroos.

Larkey will be looking to lead North Melbourne to a more improved year after finishing 16th in 2025. The North Melbourne board will need to ratify any decision before an official club announcement.
