Midfielder Jack Viney has been struck down by achilles soreness, with the Melbourne Demons still reeling from a long-term injury to defender Jake Bowey.

Viney will be on a reduced program until at least the end of the year as the Demons step up training under new coach Steven King.

Bowey will be sidelined much longer after suffering a serious foot injury in pre-season that is set to see him sidelined for approximately six months.

The club confirmed on Monday that Bowey suffered a Lisfranc injury on his left foot, which will require surgery.

Melbourne's General Manager of AFL Football Performance Alan Richardson spoke on the terrible news in a club statement.

"Jake will have surgery in the coming days to repair the Lisfranc injury," he said.

"We will ensure Jake receives all the support he requires throughout his recovery period."

The injury could mean Bowey isn't available for the first third of the season, and the decision to undergo surgery was made after consulting with specialists over recent days.

It's disappointing news for the young gun after a career-best year in 2025. The 23-year-old averaged 22 disposals, five intercepts and five marks. His improved play saw him finish fourth in the Demons' best and fairest for 2025.

The Demons will now have to find someone to replace Bowey's run and distribution off the half-backline. Recruit Changkuoth Jiath could relish in that role for Steven King to begin 2026.

Viney was one of the few bright spots in Melbourne's dismal 2025 campaign, averaging 22 disposals and four clearances for the seven-win Demons.

Melbourne will be hoping to get him back to full fitness in time for their Round 1 clash against St Kilda, as the 31-year-old looms as a key member of Melbourne's midfield for 2026, given the departures of superstars Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver. Viney could also play a significant leadership role on-field with the youth newly appointed senior coach Steven King is expected to inject into the side's best 23.
