Richmond great Matthew Richardson has tipped GWS to win the premiership this season.

Richardson, who named his top eight for the 2020 season on Sportsday, believes last year's grand finalist have showed enough in the Marsh Series to go one step better than their grand final humiliation in 2019.

"They got towelled up in a Grand Final and I just wanted to see how they look – they look super hungry," Richardson told Sportsday.

"I think the Giants will be a top two team this year and I think they can go really close (to winning the premiership)."

The biggest surprise to come out of Richardson's top eight were the omissions of Geelong and Essendon and the inclusions of Port Adelaide and Melbourne.

“I think Port came come back into the eight and from what I’ve seen of Melbourne over the summer, I’ve got a little bit of confidence back in them,” Richardson said.

Richardson's full top eight for the 2020 season is listed below:

  1. GWS
  2. West Coast
  3. Richmond
  4. Western Bulldogs
  5. Collingwood
  6. Melbourne
  7. Brisbane
  8. Port Adelaide
