Former Essendon champion Matthew Lloyd has revealed the five players he would want kicking for his life.

Lloyd wouldn't be the worst pick himself, booting 926 goals during his playing career from 1995 to 2009, including two campaigns with over 100 majors.

He is a three-time Coleman medallist and led Essendon's club goalkicking on 11 occasions.

Speaking on AFL.com.au, Lloyd explained that goalkicking is one of the key skills that hasn't improved over the game's history, hence most of the older names on his list.

1. Tony Lockett

Lloyd said: "The player I would want kicking for my life. When I got to Essendon I had real kicking issues. I had a video made for me with Lockett on one half of my screen and me on the other half of the screen. My ball drop was up this high, Lockett's was down there, and my goal was to lower my ball drop to get it  to where Tony Lockett's was.

"He's the player that I modelled my kicking on. His margin for error was so small, he rarely made errors because it was just so simple. Hand over the ball, I couldn't get it that low personally, but Tony could, and that's why Tony was the greatest of all time.

"Seeing days at the Whitten Oval and he's kicked 10 in a row. I remember that day vividly of what he could do. I don't think there should be any doubt, Tony Lockett is the greatest set shot the game had ever seen."
