Having been kings of the ring in Opening Round, Greater Western Sydney had its jaw rocked just seven days later.

GWS was beaten from pillar to post to the tune of 81 points by the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium on Saturday.

Giants coach Adam Kingsley said his side couldn't keep up with the Dogs as their rivals used different methods of attack throughout the match to blow the game apart.

"(The Bulldogs) were a little too efficient going inside their forward half... four shots from forward 50 stoppages in the first quarter," he said.

"Probably didn't defend their rebound well enough in the second quarter, (then in the) third quarter, (it was) centre bounce. That's one of the strengths of the Bulldogs; they can lean on multiple areas of their game, and we weren't able to defend or be consistent enough in all aspects of our game."

After the midfield mix of Finn Callaghan, Toby Greene and Clayton Oliver blitzed Hawthorn a week prior, Kingsley's engine room was taught a lesson in the guts. He said the game was reminiscent of the last time the Giants played the Bulldogs at Marvel, which the Dogs won by 88 points.

"I don't think we did a good job through the midfield at all; I think that was pretty evident with the centre bounce and stoppage numbers," he said.

"I don't think our guys defended all that particularly well through the midfield.

"Unfortunately, it was almost like a carbon copy of last year in this moment, in this ground, against this opposition."

Western Bulldogs skipper Marcus Bontempelli was on fire in the first half, collecting 18 disposals and kicking three goals. GWS sent Xavier O'Halloran to tag him in the second half, but Bontempelli still found plenty of the ball with a further 15 touches.

Kingsley said the Giants might have to consider tagging players earlier in the match with fixtures against Collingwood and St Kilda coming up.

"Typically, we haven't (tagged), certainly since about early last year," he said.

"Our numbers internally suggest we get a greater output without having to tag a specific player through our midfield. That's not always the case, and we will be tested in the next fortnight when we play (Nasiah) Wanganeen-Milera and Nick Daicos"
