Magpies blow, Hawks to unveil star recruits: AFLW Round 1 teams

The 2023 AFLW season will begin on Friday night with a clash between the Melbourne Demons and Collingwood Magpies and will also have the Sydney, Western Australia and South Australia rivalries on show.

Melbourne Demons vs Collingwood Magpies

Melbourne Demons

The Demons won't bring any new faces in this week however, they will be without Maeve Chaplin and Jordan Ivey, with the former missing the game due to concussion. 2021 AFLW Rising Star and premiership player Tyla Hanks will make her 50th AFLW appearance.

The Western Bulldogs will only have two new faces heading into Round 1, with Dominique Carruthers and Brianna McFarlane being the two players. The club unfortunately has three players on the sidelines at the moment due to serious injuries, with Deanna Berry, Millie Brown and Brit Gutknecht recovering from either a knee or leg injury. Eleanor Brown and Richelle Cranston are two more players who are unlucky to miss selection for the opening game of the campaign. Elle Bennetts will also play her 50th AFLW game.

Georgia Gee will play her 50th AFLW game on the weekend for the Essendon Bombers and will be accompanied by a host of new faces. Brooke Brown, Georgia Clarke, Kodi Jacques, Georgia Nanscawen, and Brooke Walker are the five new players who will make their debut for the club. However, the Bombers will have to compete without Alex Morcon and Mia Van Dyk due to an ankle and hip injury, respectively.
