After nine years and 165 games for the Brisbane Lions, premiership ruckman Oscar McInerney has announced his retirement from the AFL.
The heartbreak story of the 2024 premiership side leaves the league with a fairytale ending, playing a role in the 2025 Grand Final as Brisbane staked their claim as the AFL's latest potential dynasty, claiming back-to-back flags.
McInerney was selected 36th overall in the 2016 rookie draft by the Lions and quickly established himself as an integral part of their playing list, featuring in at least 20 games in all but three seasons of his career.
One of those less consistent years was 2025, as back injuries plagued the big man from a consistent run at AFL level, sidelined between Round 8 and 18 with the concern.
Brisbane stated in their press release that the 31-year-old's decision to leave the game came down in part to those injury concerns, with the back issue making it "difficult for McInerney to perform at the optimum level each week that he prided himself on".

Brisbane Lions General Manager Football, Danny Daly thanked McInerney for his premiership contributions and positive impact on the culture at the Lions.
“While we are sad to see Oscar retire, we could not be happier to see him do so as a premiership player because it's what he thoroughly deserves,” Daly said.
“Despite missing out on playing in last year's premiership due to injury, he still gave 100 per cent to the team off the field and was the happiest person to see his teammates win it.
“'Big O' is one of the most loved and respected people and players to have played for the Brisbane Lions and our football club is a better place for having had him part of it."
