The new lasso rule again caused confusion in the first quarter of Essendon's clash with Melbourne.
A ball spilled away from a boundary throw-in over the line, with one boundary umpire adamant that a last disposal out of bounds free kick should be awarded to Melbourne.
There was, however, conjecture between the officiators as young Bombers defender Archie Roberts protested that the ball came off hands and therefore should be a repeat throw-in.
After a brief discussion, the field umpire indicated he could not make a conclusive decision either way, and therefore called for a boundary throw-in.
The broadcaster's vision did not provide conclusive evidence either way, but the incident follows the match being delayed on several occasions in Thursday night's clash between Adelaide and Carlton.
Umpires were overruled on multiple occasions and an out-of-bounds on the full free kick was awarded to Alex Neal-Bullen following a video review.
The reason why video evidence was not able to be consulted to reach a definitive verdict on this occasion is unknown, particularly given both games were at the same venue.
Management of the new rule is still be worked through in the early part of the season, with the AFL forced to tighten up the insufficient intent rule as players in the first fortnight dived to touch a footy before it crossed the boundary line, but showed little effort to keep it in.
Carlton's Nick Haynes was punished with a free kick in that vein on Thursday.
