GWS coach Adam Kingsley has confirmed midfielder Josh Kelly will return for Saturday's match with Richmond while offering some insight into Lachie Whitfield's role going forward.

Whitfield, who was an All-Australian last year after a stellar campaign at half-back, was positioned in the front half last week in the win over Carlton.

The change of role raised eyebrows but left Kingsley encouraged with how his other defenders stood up, while Whitfield provided more efficiency in attack.

Speaking to media on Thursday, Kingsley said the Giants will continue to assess how they can get the most out of the former No.1 pick.

"I liked what I saw. We were kind of forced into doing it," the Giants coach said.

"We know Lachie Whitfield is a terrific player and has been for a long time. So he's very adaptable, you can throw him into any role. Naturally, he adjusts. He's a smart player.

"So I was really happy with what he did last week. We'll continue on what our needs are and position him accordingly.

"I still like him as a half-back, he was an All-Australian half-back. Our attack last week was quite strong from the back half, and that was without him necessarily playing across half-back. So that was encouraging."

The Giants will get a boost in the form of midfielder Josh Kelly, who looks to have overcome a hip injury to be ready to face Richmond this weekend.

GWS won't have gun forward Brent Daniels (abdomen) available this week, however, he could be given the green light for next week's game against the Power, or the following week against Brisbane.

"Josh will come in, he's fit to play," Kingsley said.

"I haven't ticked it off completely with the medicos, but he'll play.

"Brent is probably a week away. It's (encouraging), but I've been saying he's a week away for a while now.

"I'd expect him back in for Port Adelaide, we'll see how he trains next week.

"We may be a little bit more cautious given his history of soft tissue (injuries) over the past few years, which would definitely mean he'd be back for the Brisbane game."

Kingsley played down any concerns for Toby Greene and Tom Green, who were both limited on the track at Thursday's main session.

GWS will host the Tigers at ENGIE Stadium on Saturday, with a win over Richmond potentially placing them as high as fourth on the ladder.
