West Coast midfielder Sam Mitchell will reportedly retire at season's end according to the Herald Sun.

The four-time premiership player with Hawthorn will announce his retirement in the coming weeks, and will become an assistant coach under Adam Simpson at the Eagles in 2018.

The 34-year-old was selected with the 36th pick in the 2001 National Draft, and went on to have an illustrious career in the AFL.

Mitchell won the Rising Star award in 2003, and won the first of his five best and fairest awards in 2006 just three years later.

A Brownlow Medallist in 2012 and a three-time All-Australian, Mitchell played 307 games for Hawthorn over 15 seasons, before making the move west at the end of last season.

Mitchell has played 15 games for the Eagles so far this season, although it looks as though it could be his last as a player.

Over his 322 game career to date, Mitchell has averaged 26.4 possessions,

Mitchell's former teammate Luke Hodge recently announced his retirement ahead of his 300th game against Geelong in round 17.
