The Bulldogs add some defensive depth with the addition of Connor Budarick, who will return to his familiar role in the back half at Footscray, but their failure to land any key defender of substance could hurt them again in 2026.

Losing Jamarra Ugle-Hagan is unfortunate considering his proven ability to kick close to two goals a game at his best, but the midfield and forwards group proved that attacking football is the least of this club's concerns.

It's understandable why they neglected signing Steven May, but time will tell if making a play for the soon-to-be 34-year-old was a short-term fix they failed to recognise.
