What is the AFL Draft?

The AFL Draft was introduced in 1986 as another mechanism - alongside trade and free agency - to add players to a club's list.

The draft was run in conjunction with the existing zone system, but over the years, it has changed to being an equalisation measure where the poor-performing teams are assisted with the better picks.

The majority of the players from the draft are exiting high school at the age of 18, with some rare cases of mature-aged players being selected.

Draft Value Index (DVI) changes

This is the first year of the AFL's revamped Draft Value Index (DVI) system.

The previous model had points value from Picks 1 to 73, giving clubs the incentive to utilise later picks to gather enough capital to secure academy or father-son prospects.

The improved edition has stripped Picks 55 to 74 of any draft value, condensing list managers' ability to hold selections with any meaningful significance regarding the acquisition of academy or father-son prospects.

As a result of the changes, nearly 10,000 points have been shaved off from year to year, while the coveted No.1 Pick remains at 3000 points.

The previous 20 per cent discount will be reduced to 10 per cent.

All the changes were to ensure clubs paid fairer prices for tied-talents, which has seen the likes of the Ashcroft brothers and Nick Daicos join strong teams with minimal issue.
