Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell is confident that important pair Jack Gunston and James Sicily didn't suffer any serious injuries given they returned to the field in Monday's one-point thrilling victory.

Gunston was a major concern after clutching at his left hamstring in the third term, while Sicily came from the ground with a sore shoulder.

"It didn't look great, did it? I saw him lead out and I saw him go to the hammy and I was thinking, 'oh, that's not ideal'. We started doing our contingency [planning]. He stayed out there and, you know, (you're thinking) that's good, that's good," Mitchell said.

"And then they got him off, and they said he was fine, and he came back on. So I haven't had a full medical update, but the fact he came back on – having done a couple of hammies before – it's pretty unlikely that he's actually done that. I'll have fingers crossed, but we won't know more for a couple of days, I'd imagine."

Gunston, in a post-match interview following his poster to secure the victory, insisted it what just a "cramp".

As for Sicily, the Hawks skipper said his injury gave him "PTSD", saying to Channel Seven that "it feels like it's fine structurally, just a bit bruised".

Mitchell was unable to provide more context, but insisted he was told there was nothing sinister.

"It was just a stinger with him," the Hawks coach added.

"We'll have a full medical briefing. But they both came back on, so fingers crossed."

Sicily and Gunston weren't the only ones to feel the full wrath of the fiery contest, with debutants Jack Dalton and Flynn Perez drawing blood.

"I'm not usually big on the war analogy, but it felt like that. I think we had at least three, (including) both debutants came off with the blood rule. It was one of those games, you know."
