The Geelong Cats have reportedly spoken with contracted ruckman Rowan Marshall about a potential trade to Kardinia Park amid a talent squeeze at Moorabbin.

According to 7 News' Mitch Cleary, the Cats have engaged in talks with Marshall, who is contracted until 2027, about a potential move in the upcoming trade period.

Marshall has been considered to be a trade target this off-season, ever since it was reported that Tom De Koning could join St Kilda on a massive eight-year contract, which would see the 29-year-old lose his spot as the clear number one rucking option for the club.

Now that De Koning's move has been confirmed, it appears Geelong are ready to chase Marshall, having been consistently linked with him all season.

Cleary stated that it's likely Geelong would need to give the Saints a first-round pick at minimum to acquire his talents, however, should Marshall request a trade.

"Geelong coach Chris Scott always says the Cats can walk and chew gum at the same time and he's proving it once again," Cleary said on Sunday.

"In the midst of another finals series, the Cats have spoken with Marshall in recent days as he explores a potential trade.

”The 29-year-old is still contracted for another two years at the Saints, so a likely starting point for any move would have to be a first-round pick.”

"Marshall has been coy on his future with his responsibility all of a sudden halved at Moorabbin as Tom De Koning arrives on double the money.

“The Saints are also landing Jack Silvagni while Eagle Liam Ryan and Giant Leek Aleer want to join them too.”

"The Cats interest in Marshall coming as current number one ruck 34-year-old Rhys Stanley nurses a hamstring injury during the Finals."

While not as dominant as his 2023 and 2024 campaigns, Marshall still had another strong season for St Kilda in 2025, averaging 18.6 disposals, 27.3 hitouts and 4.5 marks per game.
