Former high-flying Eagle Ashley Sampi has revealed he has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

The 78-time West Coast player released a statement via the Facebook profile of Australian icon Ernie Dingo, stating he remains in "good spirits" despite the "hard and overwhelming" news.

Multiple sclerosis is a disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord which can cause nerve damage and can lead to vision loss, fatigue and pain.

Sampi expressed his gratitude for the surrounding support he has received since his diagnosis.

"I apologise in advance to you all for finding out my news this way but with the goal I’ve set for myself which you will read below, will make sense to why I am writing this," the statement from Sampi read.

"It would’ve been too hard to let you all know what I am going through and what my path for the future holds for myself and more importantly my lovely and beautiful wife Gerri and our kids.

"Last Tuesday I was diagnosed with (MS) multiple sclerosis, the diagnosis was hard and overwhelming to take in but I have such great support around me I know I will be OK.

"Once again I apologise to you all for finding out this way. I know it sounds bad but Gerri and I are in good spirits and with the neurologists and my treatment plan put in place I look forward and not behind and with the grace of God can live somewhat of a normal life for myself and my family.

"I ask you all to please try and not overwhelm us with calls or messages as we are still coming to terms with the diagnosis. I know that you all will want answers I guess but please try and hold off.

"I am sorry but please give us time and help Gerri and I raise money for my new diagnosis."

Sampi booted 97 goals during his time with West Coast between 2002 and 2006, where he won the AFL Mark of the Year in 2004.
