Essendon has announced its commitment to SSP recruit Tom Edwards, extending his time at the club until the end of 2026.
Edwards - who is currently sitting on the sidelines due to an ACL injury - had impressed over the summer months throughout the pre-season supplemental selection period, ultimately culminating in a list spot at the club.
The 24-year-old debuted in Round 2 against Adelaide, kicking three goals and started against Port Adelaide the following week, but was subbed from the match.
Despite a long-term injury and recovery process that has already begun, Edwards is confident he can still impact once he hits the field in 2026.
"I'm excited to get back out there in 2026," Edwards said.
"As devastating as my injury is, the one-year contract extension has made me hungry to recover and execute my rehab to the best of my ability.
"Once my body is ready, I want to get to work and prepare for a big season in 2026."
GM of List and Recruiting Matt Rosa shared a similar sentiment, saying the club was happy to put faith in the West Australia.
โWe are all excited to see Tom back bigger and better in 2026. He is a smart player who can have a big impact on games, so we are thrilled to have him on board next year," Rosa said.
"He proved a strong eagerness to grow and develop, and we can't wait to see him progress when his body is ready to go again."
Edwards burst onto the AFL scene as a train-on prospect at the Bombers, and performing strongly in the unofficial practice match against the Western Bulldogs strengthened his chances.
The 24-year-old kicked four goals against the Bulldogs late in the contest, and proved to be a worthwhile commodity under Brad Scott.
That performance was complemented by his VFL outing in the curtain raiser before the Community Series match with Geelong, slotting another four majors.
By the time the SSP deadline rolled around, Essendon had handed Edwards a spot. He featured in Rounds 2 and 3, but an unfortunate training incident late last month saw him downed for the remainder of 2025.
