Essendon has named Andrew McGrath as captain, replacing Zach Merrett in the role.
McGrath assumes the position after Merrett decided to stand down following his attempted departure to Hawthorn in the trade period.
The former Pick 1 is a Rising Star winner, and has been a vice-captain for multiple seasons.
"From the minute I walked into the Hangar, this place felt like home. To be trusted to lead this Club is a massive honour, and I have an immense amount of gratitude for the people who make Essendon what it is," McGrath said.
"I want to acknowledge Zach, who has played a huge role in my career. I've spent years chasing him on the track, he's taught me so much about football and life, and the standards he set have paved the way for this group to succeed.
"My leadership is pretty authentic, and I love connecting with people. Most importantly, I love helping the team reach the goals we set out to achieve.
"We're in a great position, and the past leaders have set us up to excel, and I can't wait to play my role in that. 2026 is going to be a good one for the Bombers."
Bombers' GM of Football Daniel McPherson said there was an "overwhelming approval" of McGrath's appointment, who is "someone who's frequently set the example of exactly what an Essendon person should be".
As for Merrett, he won't have an official leadership role at the Bombers in 2026, but "remains an integral person for our players to look up to and learn from," McPherson said.
The Bombers also announced McGrath's support staff, with Kyle Langford, Mason Redman and Nic Martin shaping the extended leadership group.
Emerging duo Sam Durham and Jye Caldwell have been recognised as future leaders and have been added to support McGrath, as has recruit Brayden Fiorini, who has impressed since crossing from Gold Coast.
The captaincy call comes as CEO Craig Vozzo stood down from his post after three years.
Vozzo will return to South Australia to be closer to family. Chief operating officer Nick Ryan will step into an acting CEO role in the wake of Vozzo's departure.
