Gold Coast coach Rodney Eade says clubs affected by the Essendon supplement saga should not be able to sign top-up players.

Eade believes that clubs took the risk that players could face suspensions when they traded them into the club.

โ€œMy view - I suppose Monfries is a little bit different - is that it is buyer beware I would have thought,โ€ Eade said on SEN radio.

โ€œThey knew that something was going on. If they did top-up, which maybe I donโ€™t agree with, then they should top-up their rookies first.

โ€œI think it was a bit of buyer beware.โ€

Port Adelaide signed Angus Monfried prior to the supplements saga becoming public and thus the Power did not know that he could face the a possible suspension.

Essendon have been granted permission to sign 10 top-up players, while the other affected clubs - Melbourne, Port Adelaide, St Kilda and Western Bulldogs - have applied to the AFL for permission to sign a top-up player for season 2016.
