North Melbourne and Melbourne have swapped first round picks, with the Roos handing the Demons pick eight in the upcoming draft.

The Demons have sent back their 2020 future first-round pick, as well as picks 26 and 50 from 2019.

It means Melbourne now has picks 3 and 8 this year, while the Roos' first pick is currently 26.

However, according to the Herald Sun, the Roos believe there isn't much of a difference in talent between players who will be on the board at eight and at 26.

“Part of our strategy during this Trade Period was to improve our draft position by using our future picks,” Melbourne's General Manager of Football Operations Josh Mahoney told Melbourne Media.

“Next year’s draft will have a high number of talented Academy players, and we value another top selection in this draft.

“Clubs can trade picks right up until the draft and on draft night under AFL rules and having picks 3 and 8 gives us options and flexibility.”
