Carlton will receive Pick 19 (band 2 compensation) for the departure of Jack Silvagni, as the defender heads to St Kilda.

Silvagni will join the Saints as an unrestricted free agent.

He was a third-generation Blue, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Sergio, and father, Stephen, who ironically is the list manager at the Saints.

The 27-year-old has played 128 games since he was drafted with Pick 53 in the 2015 National Draft.

"I'm incredibly excited to be joining St Kilda and starting this new chapter," Silvagni said.

"The Saints have a strong mix of established talent and exciting young players, and I feel I can add to that with my experience, versatility and drive to compete.

"As a young father, this decision is also about building the next stage of my life with my wife, Grace and our son Charlie. The opportunity to grow both on and off the field in a stable and supportive environment was really important in making this choice."

The Blues' Pick 19 will be added to their current hand of 37, 45, and 63, and will be improved with the Tom De Koning compensation.

"Acquiring a first-round selection puts our club in a good position as we look to add quality talent to our playing list," Carlton Head of List Management Nick Austin said.

The extra selection will help Carlton secure enough draft points to deal with the likely top-10 bid for exciting father-son prospect Harry Dean.

As for the Saints, Silvagni will be a much-needed defensive weapon given their lack of strong talls aside from Callum Wilkie.

Ross Lyon has trialled the likes of Dougal Howard, Zaine Cordy (delisted) and Anthony Caminiti in key backline roles.
