Former Melbourne captain Jack Viney has undergone surgery on his foot.

The midfield underwent the day procedure to relieve soreness in his left foot, which is not the same foot he needed surgery on in 2017.

The procedure is not expected to keep the star ball winner on the sidelines for the start of the season, according to Melbourne football boss Alan Richardson.

“Jack had some lingering soreness in his foot which has caused some discomfort and we decided that it was best to treat this now prior to the season commencing,” Richardson told Nick Smart from The Herald Sun.

“The plan is for Jack to commence off legs conditioning on Monday, with the aim to be back running in approximately two weeks.

“We are confident that this minor setback won’t impact Jack’s ability to be ready to go for the start of our season.”

Viney played 16 games in 2020 and averaged 19.8 disposals.
