Collingwood coach Craig McRae and captain Darcy Moore have spoken on the "heartbreaking" news of Adam Selwood's passing.

Selwood's death was revealed on Saturday, with the former West Coast player the brother to Collingwood assistant coach Scott, as well as Geelong champion Joel and former Brisbane player Troy, who was Adam's twin and sadly passed away in February this year.

Both McRae and Moore were made aware of the tragic news on the morning of their match against Adelaide, while Scott Selwood had flown to Perth to be with family during a difficult time.

Collingwood players weren't aware of the news during the match against Adelaide, with the playing group and staff informed of Selwood's passing in their team meeting immediately after.

Speaking after his side's win over the Crows, an emotional McRae sent his condolences to the Selwood family.

"We got the news this morning. It was horrible," a teary McRae said.

"We didn't really know what to do, to be honest, other than maybe give it space to sort of see where it fits with all of us. The coaches knew because we had to get to work on Scoop (Scott Selwood) getting on the plane to go back to Perth.

"So we protected the players, thinking that might have been the right thing. I don't know if it was, but we told the whole club straight after the game.

"I just want to send my love to the Selwood family."

As players dealt with the news, Moore - who did not play due to injury - spoke on the emotions that impacted his teammates and how the coaches managed to see out their duties during the match.

"When you come in to prepare for a game, your phone goes in the box and you're in a bubble. You don't hear about the outside world," the Magpies captain said.

"The players who played were unaware, and so there was sort of a one-way conversation (post-game) about what's happened, how it affects us, the importance of rallying around each other and supporting each other.

"News like this affects people in different ways, so it's about respecting that. It's just the most horrendous news imaginable.

"We work closely with Scott. We know him so well. He works so hard for us players to be out there to live our dreams. So for him and his family to be going through this, it's just heartbreaking. For us, it's about rallying around and supporting him and sending him our strength as much as we can."

Moore paid credit to the club's coaches for managing to continue with their jobs during a difficult day.

The newly-appointed AFLPA president revealed he and McRae "had a moment" before the game, with Moore speaking on the difficulty of the situation.

"It's been really, really difficult. It's days like these that don't really prepare you for the captaincy role," Moore added.

"Me and Fly had a moment one-on-one before the game, just offering each other our support.

"Sort of one of the confusing parts of it really is you've just got to, once the ball's bounced, [the coaches] just have to get the job done.

"It's not a situation that I'm prepared for. You do the best you can and support each other as much as we can."

Scott Selwood has been with Collingwood as an assistant coach since the end of 2019.
