Carlton has recommitted to a trio of defenders, extending Lachlan Cowan, Matt Carroll and Harry O'Farrell's time at Ikon Park.

O'Farrell and Carroll will remain at the Blues until the end of 2027, while Cowan's new contract will expire 12 months later (2028).

Carlton Head of List Management Nick Austin was stoked to be safeguarding the club's defensive future.

"With seven AFL debutants so far this year, we have had a look at our future, and Lachie, Matt and Harry are clearly a big part of that - we couldn't be more pleased to see them re-sign," Austin said.

"All three have put in an immense amount of work to grow their body and better their football fundamentals, ultimately setting themselves up for success at the top level. To be able to recognise and reward their effort is great.

"Their confidence has grown exponentially since beginning at the Blues, proving they can be great assets to our backline both now and in the future.

Buyer beware: How expansion could shift AFL clubs' draft plans

"We couldn't be prouder of the work Lachie, Matt, and Harry have put in since arriving at IKON Park and are excited to see what they do in the Navy Blue as their careers begins to emerge."

Cowan, who was already contracted for 2026, reaffirmed his faith in the Blues after they took him with Pick 30 in the 2022 National Draft.

Hailing from Tasmania, the 20-year-old has played 31 games to date, but has faced multiple injury setbacks in 2025, which have limited him to seven outings.

Cowan's intriguing contract decision will be a watch as the Devils intend on joining the competition for season 2028, and will likely target local talent to fill their list.

Carroll's journey to the AFL has been anything but straightforward, taken with Pick 15 in the 2023 Rookie Draft, and was delisted, and then subsequently relisted at the end of 2024.

The left-footer made his debut in Round 5 against West Coast this year, and has featured 10 times, locking down a defensive role.

The third re-signing of the group is 2024 draftee Harry O'Farrell, who joined the club with Pick 40 last year.

The Calder Cannons product made his debut in Round 11 against GWS, and has exciting traits as an intercept defender, utilising his height and speed.

O'Farrell already had a strong link to the club prior to being drafted, with his father, Peter, a successful barrister who played a pivotal role in representing Patrick Cripps during his 2022 hearing at the AFL Appeals Board, where he overturned a two-match rough conduct charge ban, ultimately making him eligible for the Brownlow Medal.

The Blues have lost their past three encounters disappointingly, and their task doesn't get easier with a clash against the reigning premiers on Thursday at Marvel Stadium.
