Ashley McGrath has urged Carlton to stay the course with his former premiership captain and coach Michael Voss.

Voss, who is the final year of his contract as Blues coach, is under extreme pressure to hold on to his job after his team's disappointing start to the season.

The Blues have slumped to 1-4 after a spirited loss to Adelaide.

"I feel for Vossy at the moment, but hopefully they can turn it around. I'd say stick with him," McGrath told Zero Hanger.

"I loved Vossy as a coach. Carlton supporters expect finals every year. It all depends on the list you've got and how the players react."

McGrath was a member of the triumphant Brisbane Lions' 2003 team led by triple premiership skipper Voss, who also coached the forward between 2009-13 before he was sacked.

The former Lions forward experienced the roller-coaster ride of being part of a powerhouse Brisbane Lions outfit between 2001-04 as well as playing in struggling teams during much of his 214-game career.

"In my early days, we were a super side from 2001-04 and I still think we were up there with the greatest teams going around, but then we fell into some bad times as well," he said.

"We spent a lot of years down the bottom of the ladder and it's great to see the club back up where it belongs, as a powerhouse of the AFL."

McGrath is reluctant to compare the great teams of his era with the current Brisbane side, but believes the Lions can contend for Grand Finals and premierships for the next 4-5 years.

Brisbane has done really well with its list management," he said.

"The game has changed totally from when we played _ it's a lot quicker.

"Once you get to the top of the mountain, you just want to stay there. When you win a premiership, the feeling you get once the final siren goes after, you wish you could just bottle it."
