Carlton Blues star defender Jacob Weitering has been cleared of any serious neck, spinal or internal injury following a horror collision during the first quarter of AFL Origin on Saturday.

The 28-year-old was taken to hospital following the incident to be assessed, with Carlton confirming on Sunday that he has been given the all clear to return to Melbourne.

While a positive update for the Blues, Carlton stated that Weitering continues to have "soreness around the chest area" which will require further assessment once the key defender is back in Melbourne.

As a result, no timeline for Weitering's recovery from the collision has been provided yet, with Carlton stating that they anticipate to have an accurate timeline by the middle of this week.

Weitering had to be stretchered from the field of Optus Staidum following a marking contest at half-back involving his Victoria teammate Sam Collins and WA's Mitch Georgiades, which saw the latter's left arm land high on Weitering as the pair fell to the ground.

Blues GM of Football Chris Davies further highlighted the positive news, stating that Weitering had "avoided significant damage".

"First and foremost we are grateful Jacob is okay and has been cleared of any major injury,” Davies said.

"It is a positive outcome given the circumstances. While Jacob is feeling sore this morning, he has avoided significant damage, so we will manage him as needed while we ramp up our preparations for the start of the season.

“Although that moment in the game was unfortunate, it does not take away from the fact that our football club is incredibly proud of both Jacob and Patrick for earning the honour to represent their respective states. It is a fantastic career achievement that both Jacob and Patrick can hold dear to them for the remainder of their careers.”
