The weather conditions at the Gabba have placed the contest between Brisbane and the Western Bulldogs in jeopardy, with the Bureau issuing a "severe thunderstorm warning".

The match is due to kick off at 7:40 pm (AEST), but there is currently a watch on how the weather will develop in the next hour or two.

It is understood that players from both clubs are not permitted to enter the ground due to the weather warning, which scenes indicate lightning, damaging winds and large hailstones.

The lightning was reportedly 10km from the stadium, but the league is optimistic that the weather will clear by 6:55 pm (AEST), the official warm-up time.

It is understood that "both teams have now been given the all clear after being stuck for about 45 minutes inside. Game still on track for a 7:40pm bounce."

It comes as the Gabba, and Queensland, have been subject to trying conditions in past contests.

The Opening Round clash between Gold Coast and Essendon (People First Stadium), as well as the Lions and Geelong (Gabba), were postponed due to the inclement weather.

The pair of games were moved, with the Cats and Lions playing off in their collective byes in Round 3, while the Suns and Bombers will face off following the home and away season, in Round 24.

More to come.
