Hawthorn has just announced that David Mirra will now be appointed the new senior coach of the Box Hill Hawks VFL team.

Box Hill General Manager, Annelie Smith, said, "David is one of the most respected figures in Box Hill History, which makes him an excellent fit as our new VFL Senior coach."

The former Hawk was with the team as a player, where he played in 11 total games across two seasons in 2018-19.

Mirra was more prominent across the VFL scene for the Hawks, playing 155 games, but was also captain throughout 2014-2017, which was a total of 78 captained games.

During his time there, he was a two-time VFL premiership player in 2013 and 2018. He won the Norm Goss medal in 2018, while he was also the captain for the 2013 side.

Mirra was awarded two Box Hill Best and Fairest, and was also selected in the VFL team of the year on four different occasions.

The 34-year-old is often classified as one of the "greatest ever VFL Hawks."

"David is an even better person who shows genuine love and care for those around him."

Mirra's appointment will also include a role for the AFL team as an AFL development coach alongside Daniel Giansiracusa, which will cause him to have a big impact across both teams in developing young players.

"Ensures our emerging Hawks are given the best opportunity to shine," Smith added.

"We know the players will really benefit from his leadership, enthusiasm, competitiveness and high-performance mindset for many years to come."

Mirra replaces Zane Littlejohn, who took up a role at North Melbourne as an assistant strategy coach.
