Hawthorn's Mabior Chol can count himself lucky as the Match Review Officer (MRO) found him innocent for a heavy tackle on Sydney's Nick Blakey.

Chol chased down Blakey inside forward 50, pinning both of the Swan's arms and was awarded a free kick and a shot on goal, despite placing the speedy defender's head in a vulnerable position.

The Hawks forward attempted to roll the left-footer in the tackle, while a key component of the incident was that Chol tackled Blakey's pinned Blakey's arms higher up, meaning the latter had his hands to potentially dispose of the football.

The MRO said: "The incident involving Hawthorn's Mabior Chol and the Sydney Swans' Nick Blakey from the Second Quarter of Thursday night's match was assessed by the Match Review Officer. Blakey has possession of the ball and Chol approaches from behind, tackling Blakey to ground. It was the view of the MRO that Chol did not use excessive force in tackling Blakey and his actions were not unreasonable in the circumstances. No further action was taken."

Elsewhere, Sydney tall Tom McCartin was fined $1,500 for staging ($1,000 early plea) in the fourth quarter, while teammate Angus Sheldrick was penalised the same amount for careless contact with an umpire in the opening term.
