The introduction for an AFL premiership ring is reportedly in its "formative stages" as four organisations have come forth with the Americanised idea.

In the NBA and NFL - as well as the Olympics - players are rewarded with championship rings when they reach ultimate glory, a concept that powerhouse Victorian club Collingwood is keen to bring to Australia.

Channel 9's Tom Morris revealed that there have been preliminary discussions surrounding the viability of a 'premiership ring' and if it has a place in the AFL.

"It's no surprise that Collingwood, who did the job out here (MCG) last September is leading the charge to have (a premiership ring) on every player's finger," Morris revealed.

"Every listed player that is.

"Diamond Districts, which is one of four organisations that is pitching to the AFL to commission a premiership ring.

"A first official premiership ring that will also go to the AFLW as well.

"This reflects overseas with the NBA and NFL."

Morris spoke to Pies CEO Craig Kelly who believes it is an opportunity that the AFL should explore.

"There is an opportunity here for the AFL industry to copy something from the American Sports model that is actually special and works," Kelly reportedly said.

“It's separate to the medals and the player and the coach. It needs to be licensed by the AFL. A version of it should be available for members and collectors.

“The ability to recognise all staff and make them feel special for all the hard work and to have something on their shelf is a good thing.

“It works wonderfully across men's and women's. Ideally, I'd love our staff and players to receive something from last year and to line up with the AFLW season and Grand Final this season."

Kelly believes that all football department staff should receive a "tiered down version" of the premiership ring, which is valued at $50,000.

Morris continued, saying: "It also must be said, that the AFL (and the premiership ring) is in its formative stages but Andrew Dillon has been involved in conversations, Eddie McGuire, Marc Murphy, Ben Dixon have all been part of various pitches to get this ring off the ground.

"And in Collingwood's eyes, they'd love to get this ring."

AFL spokesperson Jay Allen revealed that the league receives all sorts of pitches with new concepts but admitted no progression has been made.

“We can confirm we have been approached by multiple businesses pitching premiership rings, however no further conversations have been progressed.”
