Who makes the cut?

We take a look at five of the best swingman over the last 20 years.

The definition of a swingman is a player who can shift between attack and defence during a contest or on a game-to-game basis, not just a utility that has played multiple positions throughout their career.

There were dozens to choose from, but here are our top five.

Tom McDonald

While he may not be in peak form this season, Demon Tom McDonald has more than proven himself at both ends of the ground. Coming through the ranks at Melbourne as a defender, the 26-year-old emerged as the key backman in the defensive fold, but took his game to a new level in attack in 2018.

McDonald's forward presence was enormous, kicking 53 goals - almost doubling the amount he had kicked for the club prior to that season - as the Dees won their first finall in 13 years and advanced to a preliminary final. McDonald showed the Red and the Blue faithful that he was more than capable at either end of the ground.

Adam Hunter

Former Eagles swingman Adam Hunter was one of the most renown at his craft over the last 20 years.

Hunter was predominantly used as a defender, but knew what he was doing when he ventured into the forward 50. Although he was a focal point in West Coast's premiership winning defence in 2006, Hunter also managed a very respectable campaign as a forward.

He scored 29 goals that season, including 11 in the finals series. Hunter booted four goals in that year's preliminary final and kicked an iconic match-winning goal in the Grand Final against Sydney - the major that culminated from Daniel Chick's smother.

Justin Westhoff

Few Port Adelaide players have been as reliable as Justin Westhoff. Over his storied 264-game career, Westhoff has been able to produce big moments in the forward line, while preventing just as many in defence.

The 32-year-old has had stints in the midfield and the ruck as well, playing starring roles in just about every position on the ground. The ever-durable Westhoff is certainly a rare commodity, and one that the Power faithful would undoubtedly value.

Harry Taylor

Taylor is clearly a valuable asset in defensive 50 for the Cats, but the veteran has been more than capable of producing a goal for his side when need be.

The 33-year-old has been known to grab games by the scruff of the neck when providing a forward cameo. Among his best exploits would be Taylor kicking four goals on Alex Rance in 2017. while

He also played key roles down back in Geelong's 2009 and 2011 premiership triumphs.

Cale Hooker

Clearly John Worsfold has form in this department, because when Cale Hooker goes forward, good things usually happen for the Bombers.

Following on from his heroics a few weeks ago - when he scored two last quarter goals to drag Essendon over the line against GWS - Hooker was once again the saviour against Gold Coast, streaming forward in the final minutes to snatch another victory for the Bombers.

Hooker is certainly no slouch going forward, and has shown signs well before the last few instances - the All-Australian defender scored 41 goals as a key forward for the 'Dons back in 2017, providing a constant marking option and a genuine forward threat alongside Joe Daniher.

If there's one player you can swing forward and rely on to kick a goal, it's Hooker.
