AFL Cultural Diversity Ambassador Jayden Nguyen has expressed his desire to become an AFL figurehead for the Asian community.

Aged just 19, Nguyen was chosen as one of two AFL men's ambassadors, alongside Collingwood's Isaac Quaynor, and last year became the first Vietnamese person to play AFL.

“I'm definitely seeing more Asian players at grassroots level, which is great to see, so hopefully me in this position can start a trend and wave of new athletes coming through the system and in no time hopefully, many more Asian and Vietnamese heritage players are in the AFL,” Nguyen said.

The second-year defender lined up on Jack Higgins, Tom Papley and Tyson Stengle last year, making an impression with his hard edge, which earned the Category B-listed rookie a one-year contract extension.

He visited his homeland in the off-season and passed on advice and exchanged stories with members of the AFL's Vietnamese Swans.

“Going over there and seeing the impact I can have on others, and they told me that ‘you've inspired us so much and we can't wait to see you play again' so that gives me a boost of energy and hopefully I can make these guys proud across the world,” Nguyen said.

Speaking at the AFL's Cultural Heritage Series Launch, Nguyen expressed his pride in his culture and shared a message of inclusion.

“I'm super proud and honoured to be able to represent my culture and become an ambassador for the Diversity Series," Nguyen exclaimed.

“It's something I don't take lightly. I'm super passionate about growing the game and bringing my family and community along with me as well. Making my debut last year and stepping onto an AFL field for the first time last year, I felt the immense warmth and support straight away so it's something I'm super grateful for and I can tell how much it means to my community.

“I want to make everyone proud and happy and keep our game moving forward.

“Believe you belong. Your differences don't make you different, they make you unique, which is what makes the world such a beautiful place.”

Nguyen was not selected for the Bombers' Round 1 game, but will look to force his way into the lineup with strong VFL form when Essendon's VFL season kicks off against Geelong on Friday night.
