West Coast recruit Harry Schoenberg will be unavailable for Round 1 selection against Gold Coast after the club accepted his one-match ban.
Schoenberg was caught striking Power defender Logan Evans. The action is something the AFL and Match Review Officer (MRO) Michael Christian are attempting to stamp out.
The former Crow was cited by the MRO for the incident during the fourth quarter, which was graded intentional conduct, medium impact and body contact.
Schoenberg joined the Eagles as an SSP selection after the league granted the struggling club additional spots on their rookie list.
New AFL footy boss Greg Swann has made it clear that gut punches have no place in the game.
Swann altered the adjudication of the action, giving the MRO license to suspend players, with Schoenberg the first victim.
"We sent out some clips to clubs of what would be penalised, and Harry hit them all, to be honest. Swinging arm, closed fist, off the ball. He's got a week," Swann said on Fox Footy.
"(A clear message) is what you hope for... We talk about what happens at the junior levels; they mimic their heroes in the AFL. There was talk about that happening a lot, so hopefully that (the suspension) stops that too."
Gold Coast key forward Jed Walter has also accepted his one-match ban for his rough conduct charge.
Walter bumped Brisbane youngster Zane Zakostelsky after he disposed of the ball.
The MRO graded the incident as careless conduct, medium impact and high contact.
Walter will be unavailable for Friday night's clash against Geelong. His suspension will open the door for Jamarra Ugle-Hagan to debut for the club.
Hawthorn will also appeal co-captain Jai Newcombe's one-match suspension.
