West Coast and Richmond could finalise one of the first trade deals of the off-season as Tigers defender Tylar Young prepares to land at the Perth powerhouse.

Young has requested a trade to the Eagles at the cessation of his contract with Richmond following 35 games in three years during his time at Punt Road.

The two clubs opened dialogue last week and have remained in discussion over a potential deal that sees Young head west and the Tigers likely bolster their 2025 draft hand.

The Eagles have six selections for next month's draft and will add to that hand with compensation from Oscar Allen's departure, while Richmond will be keen to add later picks to their range of selections to be positioned to match a bid for father-son prospect Louis Kellaway.

West Coast list boss Matt Clarke said that while an agreement hadn't been reached, a final deal might not be "that far away".

"We had some brief discussions with them in the last week," he said.

"We haven't got anything done quite yet, but I don't think we're going to be that far away with that.

"We're excited to have Tylar commit to us as well. We think that if we can do the deals for both Tylar and Brandon, then we bring in two really experienced, hard footballers into our back six who can really help us moving forward."

Richmond, while disappointed with Young's request to depart the club, understand the Franskton product's wishes given his place in the Tigers' selection pecking order.

The club has expressed their pride in Young's development following an ACL injury sustained in the first half of the 2024 season.

"We're disappointed to lose Tylar. He's a fantastic person," Tigers list manager Blair Hartley said. "He's worked so incredibly hard to get back from his knee (injury), so it's a credit to him.

"He's probably looked at the depth of our key position backs, and looked at an opportunity at West Coast.

"So while we're disappointed, we're also proud of Tylar, and we'll support him with what's next."

West Coast currently hold Picks 1, 16, 22, 23, 37 and 57 for this year's AFL Draft.
