Brisbane will welcome back premiership defender Ryan Lester to the senior side, while the club will "wait and see" on Brandon Starcevich, who is recovering from a hamstring injury.

The Lions will travel to Perth to take on Fremantle at Optus Stadium on Friday night in a finals-like contest that will have huge ramifications on September.

Chris Fagan confirmed the return of Lester as he exits concussion protocols, but remains tight-lipped on his teammate.

"We've had quite a few injuries," Fagan said.

"Four of our backline from last year's grand final didn't play last week. We're doing it a bit tough at the moment with injuries.

"Hopefully, we get a couple back this week. Lester will be back in for sure... We'll just wait and see with Starcevich."

Co-captain Lachie Neale will miss the rest of the home and away season with a quad injury, while star forward Kai Lohmann is hopeful for a Round 24 return.

After the shock two-point loss to Sydney last week, the Lions sit fifth but are by no means secure in the top eight with a fortnight remaining.

Brisbane's past month has seen winning results against the Western Bulldogs and Collingwood, while a poor performance against Gold Coast kept them among the chasing pack.

And with Hawthorn and the Dockers to come, Fagan couldn't help but chuckle at the fixturing.

"If you have a look at our draw, we've been playing finals every week for the last six," Fagan said.

"Every team we've played, the Dogs, the Suns, Collingwood, Sydney, who are going like a top-eight side, obviously Freo, then Hawthorn, it's been pretty solid.

"Whoever invented that draw down at AFL house certainly made sure if we were going to get into the finals, we were going to earn our spot."

The Lions locked away fifth spot in 2024 with the same number of wins (14 and a draw), but this year it won't be enough.

If Brisbane is victorious over Fremantle, they will secure a position in September, giving them a chance to defend their flag.
