Brisbane young gun Will Ashcroft has thrown his hat in the ring for Goal of the Year honours after slotting a breathtaking mid-air major during Saturday's Gabba clash against the Dockers.

Taken with the second selection of the 2022 AFL Draft, Ashcroft made his way to the Lions' den with a noted ability to win the ball and break lines at will.

However, after electrifying the Gabba crowd under heavy pressure, the son of triple-premiership Lion Marcus Ashcroft can now add goalkicking wizardry to his resume.

Early in the second term, Ashcroft tapped the ball to himself deep in the pocket, and with Dockers James Aish and Luke Ryan corralling tightly, the precocious teenager had the presence of mind to throw the ball on his boot in mid-air rather than take full possession.

Despite six points being added to the board after Ashcroft's masterful display, Twitter score trackers AFLxScore only gave the Vic Metro product a 34 per cent chance of splitting the sticks from his position of 18 metres out on a 72-degree angle.

Following his memorable major, Ashcroft went on to slot his second for the game in a more conventional fashion after already racking up double-digit disposals before the half-time siren.
