Essendon great Matthew Lloyd believes the Bombers tried and failed to land Carlton key forward Harry McKay to replace Joe Daniher.

Speaking on AFL Trade Radio, Lloyd said that Essendon "asked the question" of the 21-year-old, who is contracted until the end of next season.

“I think Essendon asked the question of Harry McKay,” he said.

“He could’ve got a fair pay day to go and play for the Bombers but he wants to play for Carlton. Why would you leave Carlton a team on the rise, hopefully going to play finals next year.”

McKay enjoyed a strong season with the Blues, booting 21 goals from 13 games, taking his career totals to 71 and 48 respectively.

The Bombers are also believed to have shown some interest in Peter Wright, while losing out to Melbourne in a play for Ben Brown.
