Defence to midfield
McCarthy started to get midfield minutes in the last fortnight of 2025 and thrived, adding great transitional run and support for Harley Reid.
The 2025 mid-season pickup revealed at a press conference this week that he is set to remain in the midfield for 2026.
"At the moment, I've been training through the midfield a lot, learning lots of new craft through the likes of (assistant coach) Luke Shuey, and learning the position a lot more," McCarthy said.
"(I'm) not sure how it will look throughout the year; half-back is still there, but I think more midfield time this year. Hopefully in round one, I'll be in there."
