After the completion of the 2025 AFL Draft, which saw 84 players selected by top-flight clubs, many fans and analysts have begun evaluating the potential of these draftees to leave an early mark.
While a pre-season is still ahead of us, there are already several prospects who are considered ready for the elite level of competition.
We highlight eight of the top candidates likely to make their debut in the early stages of the 2026 season.
Sullivan Robey (Essendon)
The major development and growth spurt in the past 12 to 24 months saw Sullivan Robey take his game to a whole new level, resulting in a top 10 selection by the Bombers.
Essendon identified the need to bring in a range of new midfielders who can perform up forward after farewelling Dylan Shiel, Will Setterfield and Ben Hobbs.
Robey, who grew up supporting the red and black, proved his worth in multiple areas of the ground, and could start inside 50 before assisting with midfield duties in the years to come.
Although Essendon will see Zach Merrett, Sam Durham and Jye Caldwell lead the on-ball brigade, the next rung of players will include Robey as well as bolstering their forward-line group.
The Bombers open their 2026 season against Hawthorn in Round 1.
