State league wrap up: WAFL Round One

The Western Australian Football League kicked off on the weekend, as eight sides were hoping to get their season off to the best possible start.

Claremont smashed East Fremantle while the Swan Districts and Peel Thunder got close wins over Perth and East Perth respectively, and South Fremantle defeated Subiaco to round out the opening weekend.

East Fremantle 9.7 (61) def by Claremont 19.9 (123)

An eight-goal final term saw Claremont pull away from East Fremantle in their opening round clash on Saturday.

Former St Kilda forward Thomas Lee bagged five goals for the Tigers, Ryan Lim (28 disposals, one goal), Jye Bolton (26 disposals, one goal) and Zac Langdon (21 disposals, three goals) also led the way for the away side.

East Fremantle could only manage one goal in the final term during their 62-point loss, as former Carlton forward Matthew Watson had a strong performance with 12 disposals and three goals.

Swan Districts 12.11 (83) def Perth 11.5 (71)

The Swans kept the Demons goalless in the final quarter as Swan Districts opened their season with a 12-point win over Perth.

Ex-West Coast and Hawthorn veteran Xavier Ellis was the standout for the Swans, as he booted four goals straight and added 27 touches. David Ellard chimed in with 27 disposals while Matt Riggio led the way with 34.

Former Saint Clinton Jones was solid for the Demons with 27 disposals, and ruckman Christian Eyres had 31 hitouts along with 13 touches.

South Fremantle 17.14 (116) def Subiaco 11.11 (77)

The Bulldogs led from start to finish in a dominant performance against the Lions, as South Fremantle ran out 39-point winners.

Ashton Hams led the way for the Dogs with 25 touches and three goals, while Ben Saunders booted four in the win.

It was Max Walters for Subiaco who impressed the most, as his 27 disposals and two goals meant he was one of the Lions' best.

East Perth 4.12 (36) def by Peel Thunder 7.11 (53)

The Royals only kicked one goal to three-quarter time as Peel Thunder edged the hosts by 17 points in the final match of the opening round.

West Coast listed players Sam Butler (28), Jack Redden (26)and Liam Duggan (24) all impressed, while ruckman Jonathan Giles finished the game with 22 hitouts and 11 touches.

For Peel, Fremantle players Harley Balic (30 disposals), Hayden Crozier (26) and Thomas Sheridan (24) were the standouts.
