State league wrap-up: Finals week one

VFL

Richmond 19.14 (128) def Casey 15.11 (101)

Richmond's strong form in the seniors has translated to the VFL, with the club's reserves side reaching the preliminary final with a 27-point win over Casey on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers' blistering first half saw them take a 39-point lead into the main change. The Demons mounted a second half comeback which saw them get within five goals at three quarter-time, however, it was too little too late, with Richmond holding on.

Tyson Stengle kicked four majors for the Tigers, while Sam Lloyd kicked three. Anthony Miles continued his good form, collecting 27 disposals.

Meanwhile, Corey Maynard led all comers with 35 disposals for Casey, while Jack Trengove had 30 and Tom Bugg kicked three goals, took six marks and laid seven tackles.

Port Melbourne 16.11 (107) def Footscray (12.15 (87)

Port Melbourne kicked away late to record a hard fought win over Footscray to advance to the preliminary final.

Jordan Lisle kicked four goals for Port, while Luke Tynan had 27 disposals.

Patrick Lipinski kicked two goals and collected 22 disposals for the Bulldogs, while Bailey Williams (22 disposals and one goal) and Clay Smith (19 disposals and seven tackles) also performed well.

WAFL

South Fremantle 20.16 (136) def Swan Districts 8.8 (56)

South Fremantle advanced to next week's preliminary final with a thumping 80-point win over Swan Districts.

Shane Hockey (34 disposals) and Haiden Schloithe (32 disposals) dominated in the middle of the ground for the victors, while Blaine Johnson booted four goals.

Ex-Carlton player David Ellard was best afield for Swan Districts with 34 disposals.

Peel Thunder 14.8 (92) def Subiaco (10.8 (68)

Peel Thunder advanced to their second straight grand final with a 24-point win over Subiaco on Sunday.

Fremantle's Matt Taberner starred for Peel, kicking four goals, while Sean Darcy and Cameron Sutcliffe both kicked two.

Danyle Pearce was also impressive, with 30 disposals, nine marks, and five tackles.

SANFL

Port Adelaide 10.3 (73) def Woodville-West Torrens 5.10 (40)

Port Adelaide won through to the SANFL grand final with a 33-point win over Woodville-West Torrens on the weekend.

Jimmy Toumpas starred with 35 disposals and a whopping 13 marks, however, interestingly, did not lay a tackle. Brett Eddy kicked two goals, as did Nathan Krakouer.

Sturt 13.8 (86) def Central Districts 11.13 (79)

Sturt held off a fast finishing Central Districts to book their place in the preliminary final next weekend.

James Battersby was best on ground for Sturt, with 29 disposals, four marks and seven tackles, while fellow onballer Aidan Riley (20 disposals and nine marks) was also instrumental.

Meanwhile, Josh Glenn continued his good form, finishing with three goals and 18 disposals for the Central Districts, but it was not enough, as his side was knocked out of the finals.

NEAFL

Brisbane 12.13 (85) def Sydney 10.22 (82)

Brisbane claimed the NEAFL premiership on Saturday evening with a nail-biting three-point win over Sydney. The Swans will be ruing missed chances in front of goal, particularly in the last quarter, when they kicked 3.9, to the Lions' 3.4.

Ben Keays had 30 disposals, nine tackles and kicked two goals for the Lions, while Jarrad Jansen had 25 disposals, as well as nine tackles.

Jordan Foote was impressive for Sydney with 27 disposals, while youngster Jordan Dawson recorded a team high 28 touches.

Axed ruckman Kurt Tippett may find it hard to get back into the senior side, he finished with 15 disposals, three marks, two tackles and 41 hitouts.
