St Kilda midfielder Zak Jones' ongoing battle with injury has continued, with a leg injury forcing the 28-year-old to be subbed out on Sunday's contest with Hawthorn in the opening quarter.

Jones suffered the injury as a result of nearby a tackle between teammate Josh Battle on Hawk Connor Macdonald, with Jones' left leg bent under a falling Battle.

The Saints onballer was slow to rise to his feet and was soon able to limp off the field with the assistant of club trainers.

After some assessment on the sidelines, Jones was ruled out for the remainder of the match due to the suspected knee injury with his leg wrapped in ice.

Midfield-forward Jade Gresham was brought into the game as St Kilda's tactical sub.

Jones has endured quad and Achilles injuries this year and would eventually make his return to the field for Sandringham in June - his first game since the end of last year.

The former Swan made his first appearance under Ross Lyon in Round 17 against Melbourne and has remained in the Saints' side since.
