St Kilda and draftee Alix Tauru have decided to challenge the four-game suspension handed to the young defender following an incident in the VFL over the weekend.

Tauru has been charged with rough conduct for a third quarter incident involving Brisbane's Curtis McCarthy, with the VFL's Match Review Panel grading Tauru's actions as careless conduct, severe impact and high contact.

The penalty comes as a minimum four-game ban, with Tauru, who was playing for Sandringham, unable to reduce the suspension with an early plea.

The Saints have since decided to challenge the ban in the hope of potentially freeing Tauru or reducing the penalty, while the VFL is able to increase the suspension at the Tribunal

An upheld suspension would mean Tauru is unavailable for the next four games for both Sandringham and St Kilda.

The Saints are scheduled to face Fremantle, Carlton, West Coast and Gold Coast over the next month, while the Zebras are set to go up against Carlton, Werribee, Gold Coast and Frankston following their Round 6 bye.

Tauru has played three games in the VFL this year since recovering from a pre-season back injury,  with his latest outing against the Lions his best yet - recording 17 disposals, nine intercept possessions, 10 contested possessions, five tackles and eight marks in the 49-point loss.

Elsewhere, Williamstown's Jack Toner has been hit with a three-game suspension for striking Werribee midfielder Jack Riding. Toner has reduced the penalty to a two-game ban with an early plea.

The fourth term incident was graded as intentional conduct, medium impact and high contact.

Teammate Cam Polson can avoid a one-game ban with an early plea for his rough conduct charge on Zac Banch from the fourth quarter as well. The ban would be reduced to a $150 fine and a reprimand.
