Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell has confirmed that midfielder Finn Maginness will miss the rest of the season after suffering a lacerated kidney on Saturday.

Maginness reported pain following the weekend's win over Port Adelaide in Launceston, with the club making the decision to keep the onballer in Tasmania and receive further treatment at a local hospital.

The extent of Maginnes' injury, which is believed to have come from some friendly fire, has since been revealed, with the 24-year-old still interstate and under care.

Maginness' parents were in Tasmania for the game and have stayed with their son, whose injury will see him sidelined for the remainder of the club's 2025 campaign.

Offering an update on his young midfielder, Mitchell confirmed Maginness won't play again this year.

"It's been a bit of a scary one for him and his family," Mitchell said on Wednesday.

"He came off after the game with a bit of soreness. In hindsight, it seemed like an easy decision, but at the time it would've been easy to get him home to Melbourne and then we'll work it out.

"Our medical team have done a great job, first that he stayed and was there. We got a bit lucky that Scott and Anna, his parents, were there. Anna has been by his side the whole time I've rang him.

"He's a bit worse for wear. He's feeling supported, but feeling pretty ordinary. Unfortunately it means his season is over from an on-field sense."

Maginness' replacement is likely to come in the form of returning best and fairest winner Will Day, who will play his first game since Round 3 following a foot injury in the early weeks of the season.

The Hawks are unlikely to make another change to their forward line, with key forward Mabior Chol likely requiring another week to recover from his groin injury.

His Round 19 replacement, Mitch Lewis, will hold his spot after pulling upwell from the win over the Power, having been subbed out to ease his workload ahead of a five-day break into Thursday night's clash with Carlton.

"If it was the last game of the season, he could play. But he's going to be up against it after that," Mitchell said of Chol.

"We're probably leaning towards not playing him and giving him another week. Not 100 per cent confirmed, but I suspect he'll need another (week off).

"Mitch pulled up really well. He'll certainly play. He could've played a full game if he had to.

"It's a reasonably short week for both clubs, so won't do too much today and we'll be resdy for tomorrow night."

The Hawks will host Carlton at the MCG on Thursday night, with a win potentially placing Mitchell's side in the top three on the ladder.
